Since marketing methods are always being updated, you need to be too.

Stay in the know with these advertising news stories from the past weeks, updated September 9th, 2021.

1. TikTok beats YouTube in average US watch time.

Can you believe it? As of June 2021, US TikTok users watched an average of 24 hours of video each month. In contrast, US YouTube users watched for 22 hours and 40 minutes. And, TikTok users in the UK watched an average of 26 hours of content per month. Comparatively, YouTube users in the U.S. watched 16 hours.

The details:

  • These figures include only Android phones, not iOS.
  • TikTok’s videos of 3 minutes or less may be preferred to YouTube’s, which often run 10 minutes.
  • Whereas YouTube has 2 billion users, TikTok has roughly 700 million.
  • YouTube’s Shorts are generous with organic reach.

The bottom line:     Consider all factors when choosing which social network to advertise on.

2. Live streaming is driving serious spending on social apps.

Apparently, live streaming is a top way to draw attention to your company. According to App Annie, consumers are expected to spend $6.78 billion on social apps in 2021.

Many consumers are gifting content creators during their live streams:

  • One of the largest donations during a live stream on Fortnite was $75,000.
  • Bigo Live lets broadcasters earn up to $24,000 per month through live streams.
  • In the first half of 2021, $3 of every $4 spent in the top 25 social apps came from apps that offer live streams.
  • Apps that enable live streaming are outpacing those that focus on chat, photo, or video.

3. Reddit launches Conversation Placement ads.

Brands can leverage the power of Reddit by using Conversation Placement to reach users where they are most engaged in their passions and interests.

What you need to know:

  • Reddit users have over 350,000 conversations on the platform daily.
  • 42% of the average user’s time is spent in a conversation.
  • With Placement within a conversation thread, under the original post and above the first comment, advertisers can scale reach beyond Reddit feeds and connect with users where they are most engaged.
  • Beta testing of Conversation Placement demonstrates a track record of advertiser success, especially when used with Reddit’s in-feed advertising.
  • Conversation Placement deepens audience connection and contextual richness and lets advertisers show up in discussions related to their campaigns.
  • Beta test partners in aggregate saw a 9% average increase in clickthrough rate, 10% higher downstream conversion rate, and 23% lower cost per click rate when using Conversation Placement and Feed.

4. 10 Top SEO Scams & Cons (Plus How to Avoid Them).

As an owner of a website and/or digital agency, you likely have encountered many of the following SEO scams. Find out what makes them scams…

  • The Google partner: Google doesn’t have a partner program for SEO. Hire a certified firm or individual for SEO-related topics.
  • Search engine submittal: You don’t need to submit your web pages to Google to be indexed. You can submit your web pages to local directories if you want.
  • “We noticed your website isn’t ranking for…”: The email doesn’t specify the keywords because the sender doesn’t know or care. Hire an SEO firm that secures business through legitimate methods.
  • “This is Google. Your listing is about to expire…”: Google doesn’t have listings. Register for a Google My Business account and keep it updated.
  • “Want proof? I rank number one for X”: Because the keyword typically is very specific, putting in a small amount of work would cause anyone to rank at the top for the term. Hire an SEO firm that uses value-based methods to obtain results.
  • Prices too good to be true: You get what you pay for, especially with SEO. Hire a copywriter with SEO experience.

5. Twitter starts testing out full-width feeds.

On iOS, Twitter is testing edge-to-edge tweets that span the width of the timeline. Users’ photos, GIFs, and videos take up more room. There are mixed reviews. Instagram anyone?
